What we're doing to make an IMPACT in Swaziland
While our long-term vision is to impact all of Swaziland in a positive way, our current target area is the Lubombo Region, an area of approximately 3,696 square miles (5,947 km) in the east of the country. Due to the climate, drought, and the high prevalence of HIV in this region, orphaned and vulnerable children are greatly affected
In 2010, HopeAlive268 began offering nutritious meals, education and love to approximately 28 at-risk children at a care point in Siteki. Care Points serve as safe places for vulnerable children to play, learn, and recieve support from the volunteers who come daily to cook for them and teach them. Today, we facilitate not only the feeding of orphaned, vulnerable and abused children but also provide medical care, basic necessities and in some locations, Sunday School on Sundays. Our services have expanded to seven days a week. As the needs continue to arise, we are on the move to assist as many children as we can by supporting new projects and buildings in areas where children are often alone and caring for themselves.
We want children to thrive, not just survive. One area that is critical in ensuring that the next generation thrives is education. Lack of money for education keeps many out of school. Primary school is free, except that the children are required to wear uniforms and shoes; a cost of about $40 annually per child. For high school, uniforms, shoes and school fees are required; a cost of about $500 annually per child.
To meet this need, HopeAlive268 has established a Scholarship Fund to assist the children in need. Headmasters and teachers will submit an application to HopeAlive268 on behalf of students who are capable and motivated, but impoverished. On-site HA268 members will review all applications. Fees for the approved scholarships will be given directly to the school on behalf of the student. A representative from HA268 will accompany the children to purchase their shoes and uniforms.
With your help, we hope to impact even more lives through this new program.
Anti-Human Trafficking Division
Statistics show that over one million children are trafficked each year. In Swaziland the problem has become alarming—orphans, vulnerable children, babies and albinos are often targeted, as well as families in conditions of poverty and desperation. HopeAlive268 is combating human trafficking in Swaziland through our HA268 Human Trafficking Division. We produced a video for older youth and adults that brings awareness and education to this horrific crime. For the younger children, we wrote a children’s book titled, You Are The Only You. We are being invited into schools, care points, medical facilities, places of employment and churches to help bring awareness and ultimately, save lives!
HopeAlive268 desires to immerse team members in the Swazi culture, engaging individuals in projects that bring hope and impact the nation in a positive way. While staying in the heart of the country, the teams are involved in various projects that enhance the lives of those in need. Some of the projects include but are not limited to:
Construction and repair of buildings, often in remote areas, which provide food and care for orphaned, abused and vulnerable children
Repair projects and provision of medical supplies for local hospitals and clinics serving vulnerable children
Educational and spiritual training at schools, Care Points, and prisons, including Human Trafficking Awareness
Conferences to address women and teen issues
Distribution of food, medical supplies, and clothing in remote areas
Trips allow individuals to step out of their comfort zone and help others in need, making a positive impact forever.
